What You Need to Know About Compression Running Compression socks?

What are running compression socks? This footwear is used by runners because it is said to improve their performance during races and improve the “after running” feeling. But did you know that this type of sock is also used by patients who are suffering from unbalanced blood circulation that may cause deep vein thrombosis, fatigue and cramps? I will try to cover all this information about this and hopefully we’ll get to a conclusion in the end.

Running compression socks look like typical long socks that almost reach the knee area. Most triathlon athletes wear these, and some prefer the knee length ones.. Regardless of how you wear it, these socks are used in order to have balanced blood circulation. These socks have the ability to apply gradual pressure to your lower leg where the blood is most likely to clump. It is made of a specialized spandex like material to apply the right pressure on your lower leg, ankles and feet. In fact, known running athletes like Paula Radcliffe believe that there are too many benefits to mention in a short article. But just to give you an idea, here are some:  Oxygen is distributed evenly to your muscles, they remove lactic acid faster, they relax your muscles on the lower leg,  they increases your endurance, they prevent leg cramps, and they prevent fatigue.

If this is your first time to wear running compression socks, you may feel initially that that there is more tightness to the ankle area and loosens a bit as it goes up to your knee area.

Today, running compression socks are not just used by athletes but they are also highly recommended to people whose work requires long hours of standing and people who is required to stand and walk a lot.

Running compression socks are also prescribed by health professionals for the treatment of the following disorders:

  1. Edema
  2. Lymph Edema
  3. Phlebitis
  4. Varicose Veins
  5. Spider Veins
  6. Deep Vein Thrombosis
  7. Diabetes

Due to their ability to cure certain diseases or disorders, these socks are also referred to as medical stockings. It is said that when you have problems with blood circulation, the most affected areas of the body would be the hands or your feet. The problem with these parts is – they are too far from the heart where the oxygenated blood is flowing. It will take more time for the blood to reach those areas if waited normally. But with the use of running compression socks, blood circulation will be controlled to prevent any of the disorders mentioned above.

The running compression socks are available in different lengths and tightness. The tightness is measured using the same measurement for blood pressure which is – mmHg or millimeters of mercury. If you are an athlete, you must wear at least 15 -20 mmHg. And for those who are not an athlete, your doctor will let you know the exact tightness of running compression socks you should have.
